The function of the Signal & Telecommunication Department are: 

1

Maintenance of all the signalling equipment in the railway for ensuring their safe and smooth functioning.

2

Taking steps for modernisation of signalling systems and ensuring the implementation of the policies on signalling matters at the railway level.

3

Ensuring proper upkeep of the telecommunication equipment in the railway and planning for the augmentation of the communication services and their modernisation wherever required.

Execution of the projects under Signal & Telecommunication Department.

Ensuring the manpower planning, expenditure control and co-ordination with the Department of  Telecommunication.
